Scoping out Next Year’s Curriculum As You Begin to Rest and Recover

The school year has already wound down and the opportunity to rest and recover is vital for the wellbeing of educators. But in the precious window where both the “rear view mirror” of how it went and the upcoming school journey are present, this may be the ideal time to take action.

I recently led a 3-day summer institute in Little Elm ISD in Texas with over 60 teachers to continue to develop curriculum. Here are four reflections that teachers uncovered along the way that may be helpful for your own curriculum reviews.

1. The best time to reevaluate the viability of the curriculum is immediately after you just finished it.

When a curriculum is jam-packed with more activities and resources than anyone can do, it potentially sets everyone up to feel frenetic, anxious, and overwhelmed. This can be done at the end of the course experience or at the end of each unit — individually, with a PLC, and with the learning reflections of students.

2. The act of curriculum writing is a creative one.

It requires a series of thoughtful, strategic choices that make learning both rigorous and relevant for students. The energy or vitality in the revision comes from fresh ideas borne out of collaboration, incorporation of new resources, and developing new challenges.

3. Plan instructional sequences to make space for the learners in front of you.

The instructional and assessment choices help frame the scope of the learning experience. If you clarify the purpose or rationale of each choice, you are better prepared to be agile in the moment given who your students are and what they need.

4. Create space to breathe.

Consider moments that are worth building time for. Getting to know your students not just in the opening of school, but throughout the learning experience such as 1:1 conferences, portfolio reflections, and future aspirations.

Local, regional, and global events provide unexpected opportunities that can transform a predictable curriculum topic to an emergent one where students work to better understand an issue through investigation and design possible solutions.
